Body Sculpting: latest concepts

In Australian culture, now more than ever, looking good is becoming synonymous with being healthy. It's a well-known fact, though, that no amount of dieting or exercise can remove fat
from certain problem areas of the body. In fact, paradoxically, excessive exercise can lead to disproportionately large thighs, calves and even smaller breasts.
Liposuction has been around since the early 1980s. Despite the initial success, it was inevitable with our increasing desire for contoured figures that liposuction would need to undergo further advancements. Hence, through the genius of Professor Marco Gasparotti from Italy and Dr Luiz Toledo of Brazil, superficial liposculpture emerged as the next generation liposuction.
Liposculpture is the technique of removing excess fat from certain areas of the body and injecting the harvested fat into adjacent areas to create shape and contour. The best example of
this technique is the sculpting of the buttocks region.
Superficial liposculpture is the next generation technique. Where traditional liposuction is designed to remove the deep fat, the new liposculpture technique takes the superficial fat.
By removing the superficial layer, the skin is allowed to move freely as an independent entity and hence resume the new shape that the surgeon intends to provide.
The current thinking is that liposuction should not be used only for weight reduction but instead as a means of sculpturing the body into a three-dimensional shape comprised of convexity and
concavity. We are moving more towards patients who want to have overall changes in body shape. To varying degrees, liposculpture treats all the three layers of fat under the skin - that is, the superficial fat, the middle fat and the deep fat - and the muscle layers to varying amounts.
After surgery, it is imperative that all liposculpture patients enrol in a rigorous physiotherapy massage program, which uses a special ultrasound technique for smoothing out any build-up of
scarring in the deep tissue that may occur as a result of the liposculpture procedure. Patients need to wear an elastic garment for four to six weeks. Although the results of body sculpting can be apparent straightaway, due to swelling, the final outcome is only seen after four to six months.
Breast enhancement is an integral part of body sculpting. Women's breast shape must closely match their overall physique. For the optimal result, the surgeon must foremost improve the
shape and volume of the breasts to match the liposculpted body, preferably at the same time. Liposculpture to the hips, thighs and abdomen will have a profound effect on the perceived shape
of the breasts.
The body surgery patient needs to: * Be healthy and physically active * Be of stable weight and eat a balanced diet * Have good skin tone * Be a non-smoker * Have realistic expectations * Be
committed to wearing a post-operative elastic garment and sports bra * Be compliant with post-operative physiotherapy and massage Therefore, where indicated, a combined body/breast approach will be dramatically shape altering.
There are generally three procedures that address the breast as part of the sculpting process: breast augmentation with implants; breast lift (mastopexy) with implants and breast lift without implants. Since fat injection to the breasts has been largely abandoned in Australia, currently the only safe means of breast augmentation is the use of an implant (silicone gel or saline).
Before surgery, a patient should review photographic examples of the breasts they would like, and explain what they want to the surgeon, so there is a clear visual understanding of the desired result.
There are five crucial clinical parameters in the aesthetic assessment of the breasts:

  1. Patient's body build and height
  2. Breast size, shape and symmetry
  3. Nipple position in relation to the breast
  4. Chest wall shape and dimension
  5. Patient's desire for cup size andshape.
Generally speaking, if the breasts are of good shape but lack volume, simple augmentation using an implant will be sufficient. In breasts that are droopy with good volume, a breast lift can
be very powerful in giving the desired shape and perkiness. Finally, breasts that have lost both volume and shape will benefit from a combined breast augmentation and lift procedure.

Case Study

This young mother-of-two couldn't be happier with her recent breast enhancement and liposculpture procedures.
Tatiana, 27, underwent both breast augmentation and liposculpture procedures with Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Kourosh Tavakoli. She had been disappointed when her breasts returned to
their original 10A size after breastfeeding her two children and she wanted to improve their shape and volume. 'I had always wanted larger breasts because I wanted them to be more in
proportion with the rest of my body. I couldn't fill out my tops and I wanted to look more feminine,' she says.
Tatiana also wanted some liposculpture to remove some of the stubborn fat that refused to budge from her outer hips, buttocks and behind her knees, despite maintaining a healthy diet and following an exercise regime. 'I had a personal trainer for three mornings a week, but no amount of exercise would shift the fat,' she says. Tatiana was enthusiastic about the whole
experience. 'I couldn't wait for the operating day, even though some people told me I'd be in so much pain and that I was silly to have both procedures done in one day. I wasn't worried at
all. I knew I was in good hands, and the only emotion I felt was excitement.'
Dr Tavakoli told Tatiana she would be able to increase her breast size from an A cup to a D cup, and she chose round implants to give her the most natural result. Tatiana also wanted the implant placed behind the pectoral muscle to ensure the implants didn't look fake. She says the procedure was 'hasslefree'. She was the first patient of the day and was able to leave later that afternoon. The pain was not nearly as bad as people had told her it would be. In fact, Tatiana equated the pain from the breast augmentation with breast feeding her first child. 'My breasts were tender and uncomfortable, and I didn't want them touched, but it wasn't unbearable,' she says. 'The liposuction was probably more painful than the breast augmentation. It hurt the most behind my legs. I found it difficult to sit down and go to the toilet because the area behind my knees was sore and bruised.'
Tatiana was told the recovery time would be about three weeks for the breast augmentation and six weeks for the liposuction, but she was back at work in four weeks.
Tatiana says the results have given her a huge confidence boost. She is able to wear revealing tops and thinks she's a lot more outgoing. She says the liposuction has also made a huge improvement to her figure, although she says she'd like some more fat to be removed in the future.
She says people noticed that she had had a breast augmentation, because her breasts had increased to a D cup, but she was told the result looked very natural. She says the procedures were important to her, as she had wanted larger breasts and fat removed from stubborn places for as long as she could remember. The advice she offers to others is to do the research, choose an appropriate surgeon, make an informed decision and, most importantly, to do it for yourself and not for others.

Menopause and Anxiety

The mid-life phenomenon known as menopause and the stresses of anxiety go hand in hand. Panic attacks, rushes of energy, burning in the chest, unusual vibrations throughout the body, and warm sensations are some of the physical effects you may feel under this condition.
When menopause hits, there is a greater chance women will go through anxiety and depression. Christian Northrop talks about this phenomenon in her book, Wisdom of Menopause, where if a woman has repressed something in her life, she wonÂ’t be able to get past menopause employing the same tactics. For example, unexpressed anger will find its way out and sometimes in unusual or uncomfortable ways.
In what is often referred to as a ¨midlife crisis,¨ this time of life forces women to re-evaluate themselves and the role(s) they play as they are getting older. And, often times we are not comfortable with what we find. A little voice in the back of our head is saying, “If you don’t make changes now … you never will!” Our hormonal imbalances (due to decreased estrogen levels) can contribute to feelings of depression or make us feel plain ‘indifference.’ Even if menopause isn’t actually causing these conditions, it can heighten underlying anxiety and bring it to the surface.
Anxiety is an individualÂ’s prolonged feeling of dread and worry with no particular reason behind it. ItÂ’s uncomfortable and causes stress particularly on the body. It can be triggered by problems in everyday life like paying the bills and work. Although worrying about these things for a normal person has its ceiling of severity, menopausal women suffering from anxiety tend to think about their problems excessively.
When anxiety finally hits its highest peak, it is often called a panic attack. Panic attacks are debilitating episodes of fright and fear that include chest pains, fear of death, and shaking. In what is called being ¨psychosocially¨ depressed, women have negative beliefs and attitudes in regards to getting older, assuming unwanted roles such as caretaker, and responding negatively to impatient husbands who might demand sex.
Being depressed during the duration of this condition has a lot to do with their overall psychological well-being prior to menopause. Women who have continuous anxiety and depression beforehand are more likely to suffer worse cases of anxiety during this latter phase of life. If life-long imbalances have not been healed, menopause may exacerbate the situation. We might feel unable to perform ¨female duties¨, contributing to feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. Research has found that consistent regular physical activity (i.e. exercise) before menopause has been scientifically proven to lessen the possibility of anxiety symptoms during this transition. ItÂ’s also helpful to avoid drinking caffeine-loaded liquids, sleep deprivation, and stimulant use. Also, numerous women report that black cohosh has helped them lessen or eliminate their anxiety.
Psychiatric consultations are highly recommended for anxiety sufferers under menopause. An experienced counselor and/or therapist can help us recover and evaluate our lives including healing emotional imbalances. It is a great time to refocus our attention toward new activities and roles. As is common with anxiety, feelings of worthlessness, fright, and even suicidal tendencies can occur. In this case, antidepressants may be prescribed. Coping with all of the physical changes, assuming new roles, possibly facing many of our fears for the first time, and generally waking up to the fact that ¨life just isn’t what it used to be¨ are all realizations that contribute to anxiety in older women. In these times, it is important to maintain focus and concentrate on the positive things in life. Although it can be hard, it can be done.
Having a plethora of life responsibilities and obligations during menopause can create stress, and having an ´excess´ of this stress can cause adrenal fatigue. Anxiety in menopause sufferers results from hormonal imbalances. In the menstrual cycle, ovulation causes progesterone (which has soothing effects on the mind and body) to be released. Irregular cycles are grounds for anxiety build-up, as a result of the lack of this ¨happy hormone.¨ All of these conditions can be treated with alternative therapies such as natural progesterone cream.
But why do some women go through menopause and barely notice a difference? One consensus among medical doctors theorizes that it has a lot to do with womenÂ’s self-esteem and self-confidence. One thing is for sure, if you are having trouble with either of these, youÂ’ll get a chance to deal with them now. One thing menopause is great at, and that is bringing out our unresolved issues. And we all know how anxious that can make us.

Making Scents Of Perfume Choices

In the cut-throat world of perfume design and manufacturing, perfume is a complex chemical mixture of essential oils, aroma compounds, fixatives, solvents, beautiful bottles and celebrity-endorsed marketing. For those who wear perfume however, the final product is much more than the sum of its parts: for many, perfume is a much-loved element of personal preparation, as essential as dressing or brushing one’s teeth.
A quick tour of the cosmetics and personal care section of any department store reveals the wide array of perfume available on the market, with many more available exclusively through high-end perfume boutiques or import shops. There are so many choices, in fact, that knowing what to buy can be confusing.
Depending on their chemical composition and ratio of fragrance oil to solvent, scents generally fall into one of the following categories:
Perfume extracts (20%-40% aromatic compounds), eau de perfume (10%-30% aromatic compounds), eau de toilette (5%-20 % aromatic compounds) or eau de cologne (2%-3% aromatic compounds). The more aromatic compound that is used the longer the scent will last. Perfume is made up of dozens of ingredients, so it can be difficult to describe the overall effect as just one scent. However, it is possible to identify different contributing scents, similar to how one who knows wine can taste the varying flavors of its composition.
Perfume fragrances are generally categorized by olfactive families such as floral (self explanatory), Chypre (used to describe scents such as apricot), Fougère (woody or herbaceous scents), leather (honey, tobacco, or wood tar scents so named because they are reminiscent of leather), woody (such as sandalwood-, cedar- or patchouli-dominated scents), ambers (vanilla or animal scents), and citrus (refreshing scents).
'Notes' are another way to describe or categorize perfume and how it smells as it evaporates off the skin over a period of hours.

  • Top notes: this is what one first notices after applying perfume. Top notes are generally pleasing and strong, but evaporate quickly.
  • Middle notes: also called the 'heart notes' a perfumeÂ’s middle notes are considered the main body of a perfume, and tend to be less strong than top notes. Middle notes are noticeable anywhere from a few minutes up to more than an hour after perfume application.
  • Base notes: the lasting impressions from a perfume application, base notes give a fragrance its depth thanks to the holding power of the fixatives used in the perfume formulation.
The creation of the art of making perfume is attributed to the Egyptians, but perfume has been embraced by the rest of the world with uses as wide ranging as religious duty in some Islamic culture, camouflage for poor hygiene in early Europe, and even as a slow-absorbing poison! Today, however, perfume is used by both men and women for personal enjoyment and appeal. Many consider a particular scent as part of their identity, and thanks to this loyalty, many popular perfume fragrances, such as No 5 by Chanel, have been around for nearly a century.
As lovely as perfume can be, many people are allergic to it, so always be sure your scent of choice is not offensive to anyone before you wear it in a crowded area.
